Climate-resilient Sanitation Facility at Rural Health Center in Huzhu County, Qinghai Province

Taizi Branch of Huzhu County People's Hospital (referred to as “Taizi Branch”) is situated in the east of Qinghai Province, a region that is remote, mountainous, arid and cold. The hospital's original toilet is a dry toilet with inadequate internal facilities, causing inconvenience for hospital staff and patients. Without sewer networks or sewage treatment systems, feces cannot be effectively disposed of, posing risks of environmental pollution and disease transmission.

UNICEF, in conjunction with China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MARA), constructed climate-resilient Water-flushing Sanitation Facility in Taizi Branch that utilized a combination of energy- and water-saving technologies. The water cistern embedded in the wall of the structure increases the water flow rate and, consequently, uses only 0.5-3L of water per flush – less than half the amount of water required in by standard toilets.  Leveraging Qinghai's abundant sunlight, the toilet is fitted with a “solar air heating system”, while the walls of the building utilize polyurethane insulation material to minimize energy consumption and carbon emissions. A sewage treatment system has been designed, incorporating a disinfection process. Wastewater from the toilets meets the standards before discharge to the municipal pipeline network.

Following the construction of the new sanitation facility, the convenience for both hospital staff and patients has significantly improved, with the inclusive design of accessible toilets meeting diverse needs. Additionally, effective sewage disposal has been implemented, thereby eliminating the risks associated with disease transmission and environmental pollution.
